Drop The Hammer! A guide to getting ripped with man tools.

I’ve recently fallen in love all over again with tractor tire and sledge hammer training.

Why? Because these two tools are super effective at helping your increase your lung power and metabolic rate, not to mention it helps you burn a ton of calories when you play effectively. These benefits are gained just by beating on the tire with the hammer. When it comes to flipping the tire, you’ll:

  • Improve your leg strength, particularly your hamstrings.
  • Improve your forearm strength, especially the muscles on the underside of the arm.
  • Improve your pushing power.

All of these benefits definately carry over to lifts such as the barbell squat, the deadlift, and the bench press.

All you need are… a sledgehammer and a tractor tire. Of course, you have to mind the details when choosing each of these items.

Here are a couple of considerations:

  1. Your current strength levels.
  2. The size of the tire and weight of the sledgehammer.

Let’s look at point number 1 first…

your current level of strength/fitness will factorly greatly into your choice of a sledgehammer. The one that I use is 15 pounds. I find that this is a great weight for me to do longer interval work with. I can work effectively for a good hour. If I were to choose a heavier mallet, I’d only be able to train for half that time, although a heavy hammer is good for power training and for bigger, stronger people. Having considered this, you have two choices:

  1. You can buy 1 hammer – One light
  2. You can buy 2 hammers – One light and one heavy

If you buy 2 hammers, then you can develop a training system consisting of Heavy Hammer work and Light hammer work days.

Let’s consider the tire for a moment. You have to assume logically that if you’re going to buy a tractor tire, you’re going to want flip it eventually. It’s how nature designed us :/

Keeping that in mind, I recommend you to start with a lighter tire. The tire that I use is around 500 pounds. I’m a dummy, and I like a challenge.

Where to get your tire

Believe it or not, it’s extremely simple to find a tractor tire. All you have to do is call around to your local tire shops until you find one that has tractor tires. Some of them may even deliver the tire to a location of your choosing for free, like they did for me.

Getting your hammer

I think the best bet – if you have the dough to spare on your strength goals – is to get 2 hammers, one light and one heavy.

Stanley makes some good quality sledgehammers. You can get a light one here ( 8 pounds) and get a heavy one here. (14 pounds)

I’ll be posting a video soon with the proper swing and proper flipping technique shortly:)
